The Lottery Office and GCHF bring joy to 15-year-old Abdul

It’s easy to overlook the immense impact that healthcare and community support can have on individuals facing severe health challenges. For 15-year-old Abdul, who arrived from Afghanistan with Thalassaemia, the Gold Coast University Hospital provided critical medical care, but it was the heartwarming collaboration between The Lottery Office and the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation that truly uplifted his spirits.

By organising a dream day out with the Gold Coast Titans, The Lottery Office transformed Abdul’s journey from relentless medical treatments to a memorable experience filled with joy and hope, illustrating the profound difference that charitable initiatives can make in the lives of those in need. Watch the video here.

Abdul’s Journey to the Gold Coast

Abdul’s story begins in Afghanistan, where he was born with Thalassaemia, a complex blood disorder that requires extensive medical care. Seeking safety and better healthcare, Abdul and his family fled to a refugee camp in Pakistan. When they finally reached Australia, their priority was not sightseeing but rushing Abdul to the Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) Emergency Department. Here, the dedicated medical team admitted Abdul to the Children’s Ward, initiating his journey toward better health and stability.

The Role of Healthcare Professionals

Michelle Noyes, a Nurse Practitioner specializing in Haematology and Oncology, has been a linchpin in Abdul’s treatment over the past year. She meticulously coordinates his care, arranging appointments with subspecialty teams, including cardiology and endocrinology. Michelle’s commitment goes beyond medical treatment; she strives to ensure Abdul’s comfort and well-being, understanding the emotional and psychological toll of his condition.

During one of Abdul’s monthly blood transfusions, he shared his passion for rugby league and the Gold Coast Titans with Michelle. Inspired by his enthusiasm, Michelle envisioned creating a memorable experience for Abdul and his brothers, who had endured significant hardships.

The Power of Charity and Community Support

Knowing about the partnership between the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation (GCHF) and The Lottery Office, Michelle reached out to GCHF with a heartfelt request. The Lottery Office, Australia’s leading provider of international lotteries and the principal sponsor of the Gold Coast Titans, responded with an extraordinary gesture. They arranged for Abdul and his brothers a private behind the scenes Inner Sanctum Tour of Cbus Super Stadium, four tickets to a Titans game, and an official Junior Titans jersey.

This act of kindness brought immense joy to Abdul and his family. For Abdul, a devoted Titans fan, attending a live game was a dream come true. His excitement was palpable, and the gratitude from his family was profound. This experience was more than just a day out; it was a moment of normalcy and happiness in their challenging journey.

The Impact of Charitable Actions

Michelle reflects on the significance of this experience, noting that while medical treatments can keep Abdul well, they do not cure his condition. “Even though we can keep Abdul well with medication, regular blood transfusions, and nightly self-administered subcutaneous infusions, the only cure for his condition is a bone marrow transplant. Abdul goes through a lot, so it has been wonderful to do something nice for him,” she shares.

The collaboration between GCHF, The Lottery Office, and the Gold Coast Titans underscores the importance of community and charitable actions. It highlights how organisations can come together to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families facing adversity.
