COVID-19: $15,000 donation to help put meals on tables for the vulnerable

Meals on Wheels Queensland is a not-for-profit organisation that is bringing local communities together and keeping them safe by delivering meals to thousands of at-risk people during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

To relieve the strain on resources and increase employment opportunities in a time of hardship, The Lottery Office has made a $15,000 donation to keep its critical services running.

In response to the global health crisis, Meals on Wheels has been inundated with requests for meal deliveries to the vulnerable and the elderly, placing pressure on current resources.

The challenges are confounded by the fact that the vast majority of its volunteers are seniors and are unable to continue their services due to their requirement to now self-isolate.

Meals on Wheels has more than 15,000 volunteers who deliver two million meals a year across Queensland to more than 10,000 people with a variety of support needs.

This donation will enable Meals on Wheels to hire temporary drivers to keep up with the inundation of meal requests in local Queensland communities.

Additionally, The Lottery Office’s donation will pay for meals for the elderly and susceptible who cannot afford to during this challenging time.

The Lottery Office CEO Jaclyn Wood said the benefits of Meals on Wheels during this pandemic will be far-reaching, improving the outcomes for our most vulnerable community members.

“This $15,000 donation will alleviate the stress on the elderly and immunocompromised within our community,” Ms Wood said.

“Meals on Wheels allows at-risk people to stay home and self-isolate without the worry of having to leave the house to visit supermarkets.”

“This donation is critical towards replenishing food supplies and subsidising additional personnel and transport to deliver nutritious meals to our state’s most vulnerable and isolated people.”
