Here are some important facts about EuroMillions that are worth knowing:

1. When we purchase matching tickets in a EuroMillions lottery draw in Europe, we use the same lottery as those on your European Millions ticket.
2. If the overseas EuroMillions ticket wins any prizes, we collect the prize money and pay the same amount to you.
3. Should any of your winning tickets yield prizes that total less than AUD$10,000, we promptly credit your Lottery Office account with the equivalent prize value upon the finalisation of the draw results. Winnings can then be withdrawn.
4. Upon the finalisation of the draw results, if your winnings amount to AUD$10,000 or above, we'll promptly get in touch with you to coordinate the delivery of your prize. Rest assured, we do not deduct any fees or commissions from your winnings, ensuring you receive the full amount, always.
5. Residents of Australia and New Zealand over 18 years of age can purchase European Millions tickets, giving them the potential to win from EuroMillions draws.

How to Play EuroMillions

To play the EuroMillions, you need to select 5 main numbers from a pool of numbers, from 1 to 50.

You must also select 2 ‘Lucky Star’ numbers from a different pool of numbers, from 1 to 12.

When you pick your numbers, you can choose to either pick your own, or you can have them instantly generated randomly for you with a “quick play”. Many people believe that picking your own numbers gives you an advantage in winning a lottery prize, however this is not true. Statistically, the odds of winning are exactly the same and it doesn’t matter whether your numbers are generated randomly or picked manually.

The European Millions lottery at The Lottery Office has the same game rules and draw mechanics as the EuroMillions.

EuroMillions’ Highest Ever Jackpots

The record to date for the highest ever EuroMillions jackpot is €240 million (AUD$392 million). In the 10 December 2023 draw, a sole winner from the Austria took the entire prize for themselves!

€240 million was previously the highest possible prize in the EuroMillions. After the win, it was increased to €250 million (approximately AUD$400 million).

Where is EuroMillions Played?

The EuroMillions is played in Austria, Belgium, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Spain is the only country in which both EuroMillions and the Eurojackpot are played.

History of EuroMillions

The EuroMillions was launched in 2004 through a collaboration between the French, Spanish and UK lottery providers. The idea behind the new lottery was to create a bigger and more exciting lottery that could offer more substantial prizes than the conventional independent national lotteries could.

The EuroMillions lottery quickly grew, expanding from being sold in three countries across Europe to nine countries today and is one of the most popular lottery games in Europe.

The EuroMillions lottery has come a long way since its launch in 2004. It is now one of the most popular lotteries in the world, and it continues to offer players huge prizes and exciting experiences.

Over the years, the EuroMillions lottery has undergone several changes in its game format. The current format of 5 from 50 and 2 from 12 has been in place since 2016.

These changes allowed for bigger and better prizes, and further increased the popularity of this beloved lottery game.

In February 2007, the EuroMillions conducted its very first EuroMillions Superdraw, giving players the chance to win a jackpot worth a minimum €100 million (approximately AUD$155 million).

The Lottery Office’s own European Millions lottery was launched in late 2018. It’s now a favourite of players at The Lottery Office. When players buy a European Millions ticket, we secure a corresponding ticket in a EuroMillions lottery draw overseas with the same lottery numbers. This arrangement makes it possible for Australians to get the benefits of the EuroMillions lottery without having to leave Australia.

EuroMillions Jackpot Cap

For many lotteries, there’s no limit to how high a jackpot can get. This means with each time the jackpot isn’t won in a draw, it rolls over and grows larger for the next draw.

EuroMillions works a little differently. A jackpot cap has been in place since 2009. This means there’s a limit to how high the jackpot can get. It may sound counter-intuitive, but the jackpot cap is an excellent feature that can result in more people getting larger prizes. So how does it work? Once the jackpot cap has been reached and isn’t won, the money that would go towards making the jackpot larger for the next draw instead goes to the next division winner. This means that most likely winners in division 2 or possibly division 3 will get the benefit of this extra money. Given that these divisions are much easier to win than the jackpot prize it’s a great opportunity to play for huge money, with much better chances than normal of winning it! In fact, it’s not unusual to see division 2 swell to over AUD$30 million in these cases. There is a limit to how long the cap can hang around for, though; if the jackpot prize isn’t won after 5 draws with the cap in place, the entire jackpot prize will roll down, again to the next division with at least one winner. This is how we could potentially see division two win $400 million! This is a completely unprecedented amount of money for a division 2 prize. Even the jackpot prize in the vast majority of lotteries gets nowhere near this size.

As you can see, the jackpot cap, while restrictive in a sense, can bring opportunities for lower divisions to win much more significant prizes than usual.

Since 2020 the EuroMillions jackpot cap has been slowly increased by the lottery administrators by €10 million each time the cap was reached.

As of 10 December 2023, the jackpot cap sits at €250 million (approximately AUD$400 million). The cap will then remain at €250 million, until any further changes are announced by the administrators of the EuroMillions lottery.

EuroMillions Prizes

The European Millions prizes are exactly the same size as those in the EuroMillions. They change each draw, depending on ticket sales.

There are a huge 13 prize divisions altogether and prizes can be won by matching as few as 2 winning numbers.

The division 1 jackpot prize is a minimum of €17 million (approximately AUD$25 million).

The jackpot is paid out as a single lump-sum payment. In the event that more than 1 ticket matches the winning numbers, the jackpot is shared amongst each winning ticket.

Each entry has a 1 in 12 chance of winning a prize in the EuroMillions lottery.

EuroMillions Superdraw

Euromillions Superdraws are special events that take place 3 or 4 times each year. For Superdraws, the jackpot is automatically set at a minimum of €130 million (approximately AUD$200 million). It doesn’t matter what the jackpot was in the previous draw; even if it was only AUD$25 million, the Superdraw main prize will still be at least AUD$200 million.

The cost of an entry into a EuroMillions Superdraw is exactly the same as a regular EuroMillions draw. The odds of winning each prize are exactly the same, as are the game mechanics.

It’s not unusual for Superdraw jackpots to not be won by anyone. When this happens, the prize rolls over to the following draw. Superdraws can be a helpful shortcut for the jackpot to reach its cap of €250 million (AUD$400 million).

If a Superdraw is due to take place and the regular European Millions draw jackpot is already higher than the Superdraw’s, the Superdraw will be postponed to a later date.

EuroMillions Lotto Systems

Lotto Systems let you select more, or fewer, numbers when playing lotto. The end result is more chances to win compared with standard lotto games. The EuroMillions lotto systems are not offered, however lotto systems are available when playing the European Millions at The Lottery Office. For standard European Millions games, players must select 5 main numbers and 2 Lucky Star numbers. European Millions lotto systems allow players to choose up to 10 main numbers (which is the equivalent of playing 252 standard games). There is also the option to guarantee 1 (equivalent of playing standard 11 games) or both Lucky Star numbers (equivalent of playing 66 standard games), meaning you don’t need to pick them; you’re guaranteed the winning Lucky Star numbers. Lucky Star numbers are required in 9 of the 13 prize divisions (including the jackpot), so these options have a real advantage over standard European Millions games.

EuroMillions Syndicates

When the EuroMillions jackpot grows to a significant size The Lottery Office opens syndicates in their matching European Millions lottery. Syndicates let players combine their money together to buy more European Millions tickets than they could if they were playing by themselves. With a much larger pool of funds and subsequently a larger collection of lotto games, the chances of winning prizes is greatly increased. The cost of the games is shared as are the prizes. Syndicates are a useful way to increase the chances of winning a lottery and although the wins are shared amongst syndicate members, jackpot wins will still ensure that everyone get a hefty prize!
